John H. Walker has more than 35 years' newspaper experience. A Mississippi native, he has edited or published newspapers in six states, winning numerous awards. In 2008, he was named Louisiana Investigative Reporter of the Year and in 2009, his newspaper was named both Louisiana and National Newspaper of the Year. He is as a communications consultant and strong local contentl is the key to continued longevity for newspapers. He is an avid college baseball fan as well as a railfan.

Help Hardee's help our troops

Now, thru May 23, you can make a $1 donation at any Hardee's or Carl's Jr. fast food restaurant that will benefit our troops and their families. In return for donating to "Stars for Troops," you will receive a coupon book with $10 worth of coupons.

Funds raised during the campaign will assist troops and their families through two programs: Homes for Our Troops and USA Cares.

As the stepdad of a soldier who has done two tours in Iraq and a third in Afghanistan while his wife and two little boys were stateside, I'd ask you to help ... besides, their biscuits and gravy's pretty good.

Remember, this program benefits those who've got our backs.

About me

I'm a country kid, growing up four miles from the rural Mississippi Delta farming community of Louise.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of compiling an annual, if you please, on the accomplishments of the graduates of our little school.

Louise never had a senior class larger than 18 students and the entire school was housed in just four buildings — elementary, high school, ag/home economics and cafeteria. In the 40-year history of senior classes, from 1932-1972, we estimated about 650 students attended the school.

Our little school produced a rocket scientists, the dean of a major university's dental school, FBI agents, noted educators, published authors and even the owner of a proessional football team.

In compiling that, it became clear that school size has nothing to do with what you do in life ... and our little school, which was filled either with teachers starting out of finishing up, was successful because they cared and our parents cared.
